Current member Rob Lundquist, another Minnesotan, joined in 2008. Home Free was performing on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, where Brown was working as a singer, and they all became close. At the time, Brown said he would be interested in joining the group if there was ever an opening, which happened in 2012, when Atwood decided to leave the group to spend more time with his family. Home Free has collaborated with many notable artists. In 2015, they were featured on Kenny Rogers' final album Once Again It's Christmas, performing "Children, Go Where I Send Thee" with Rogers.
It was Chris who had the idea to start performing together, and Home Free was born. Their name came from a boat belonging to Atwood’s grandfather. The affectionate 36-year-old from Minneapolis, Minessota worked as a bartender for many years before joining the group in 2008.

The campaign met its initial funding goal in nine hours and stretch goals were added for further funding. The pre-filmed concert was streamed from December 2 to 5, 2020, and featured guest appearances by Alabama and The Oak Ridge Boys, among others. On March 18, 2016, it was announced that, after sixteen years of performing with the group, co-founder Chris Rupp would be leaving to pursue a solo career. He would be replaced after May 8 by Adam Chance, formerly of Street Corner Symphony.

He studied Journalism and music at the University of Oklahoma. He performed with another a capella act, Street Corner Symphony. He joined the quintet in the year 2016 replacing Chris Rupp as the baritone Harmony. Rob Lundquist is one big movie buff and said to have watched over 2000 movies. This led him to team up with Eric Buegler, who is also a professional acapella singer who sings for The Sound Exchange. Brown comes from a long line of construction workers, and once thought he might follow in their footsteps. Since joining, Foust and Brown have also become very active in writing and arranging. The group, made up of Chris and Adam Rupp, Lindquist, Foust and Brown, competed in the fourth season of The Sing-Off, recording their performances in September 2013. During that time, the group arranged for substitute performers to fulfill their previously-scheduled concert commitments. The series was televised in December 2013, and the group headlined the Sing-Off tour across 32 cities in 2014. The five founding members were brothers Chris and Adam Rupp, Matt Atwood, Darren Scruggs, and Dan Lemke. They took their name from a boat owned by Atwood's grandfather who helped support the group financially in their early years. The group began as a hobby for the singers, but they gradually grew in experience and popularity. By 2007 they had enough of a following to pursue music full-time. During this period, the Rupp brothers and Atwood formed the core of the group, with Atwood singing lead tenor.
What we love more about our huggable Rob is that he is very proud of his family and is also blessed to have a very supportive wife. He introduced himself to the guys of Home Free after watching them perform. He joined Home Free after graduating from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 2008. He moved to Minneapolis, where he worked at the Guthrie Theater as a bartender, and he used to sing for a fellow Minnesota-based group called Four Shadow. Lundquist said that performing on “The Sing-Off” required a marathoner’s endurance, but he was ready for the task because of the training that he received from the University. On October 8, 2020, the band announced an Indiegogo campaign to fund a virtual holiday concert called "Warmest Winter" to coincide with the release of a new CD of the same name.
Don McLean invited them to collaborate on a 50th anniversary recording of his 1971 hit "American Pie". In terms of musical roles, Home Free includes a lead tenor , a high tenor , a baritone , a bass , and a beatboxer , who provides percussion sounds. Lundquist and Chance sing traditional tenor and baritone harmony, respectively, and Foust sings bass with the range of a basso profundo. All of the singers occasionally sing solos supported by the harmonies of the other singers. Home Free was originally formed in January 2001 by Chris Rupp in Mankato, Minnesota, when some of its members were still in their teens.
